Seminar: Learning Mastery through Empowered Learning

This seminar is highly interactive and uses whole brain learning techniques to show the participants how they can become empowered learners. The methodology and the content of this seminar is innovative and will greatly assist participants in understanding their own strengths as a learner and how best to approach new learning situations.

There are three sections to the seminar:
  • Profiling the learner
  • The foundations for effective learning
  • Strategies for empowered learning.

Section 1: Profiling the Learner

This is a very important section of the seminar as it validates the learning style and unique abilities of each participant. The profiles include:
  • Areas of Intelligence – We use the intelligences identified by Howard Gardiner for this purpose.
  • Left Brain/Right Brain Dominant – Here the students identify their personal strengths and are also introduced to tools which will strengthen the less dominant side of their brain.
  • Learning Style – The participants will identify their preferred learning style whether it be Auditory, Visual or Kinesthetic and will be given advice on study techniques which are appropriate to each type of learner.
  • The Structure of the Brain – Participants are introduced to the different parts of the brain and given an overall understanding of how we operate from different parts of our brain depending on the situation and circumstance.

Section 2: The Foundations for Effective Learning

  • Diet, Sleep and Exercise – These are key elements to success in all areas of life and the importance of each from a learning perspective is reinforced.
  • Motivation – The first and most important step is to have the participants connect with the reason they want to achieve good results in their exams. This is the most important element of any study program. In order to achieve any result you must have a strong enough reason why.  We help to find and articulate that reason.
  • Goal Setting – The importance of having the right focus and direction is emphasised and explained. If the participants have already completed the Leadership Mastery Program, they will be aware of importance of setting goals in each area of their life and have articulated the goals they want to achieve in this area.
  • Time Management – A critical skill in any learning program. Getting the best out of the time you put in is one of the most important skills that can be developed in any walk of life. Participants are thought how to structure and organise their time to use it in the most productive way possible and in a way that is conducive to the learning process.
  • Environment – Creating an environment that is conducive to the learning experience can often improve the results achieved dramatically.

Section 3: Strategies for Empowered Learning

  • Active Reading – Here the participants are introduced to methods of increasing their reading speed and comprehension.
  • Relaxed Alertness – Often the reason for poor results is not the lack of preparation but a failure to control one's physical and mental state on the day. The participants are shown how to control their physiology and focus in order to get the best from themselves. Each participant is given specific techniques that will assist them in getting the best from themselves on the day of the exam.
  • Mind Maps – Mind Maps are now regarded world wide as an efficient way of organising, structuring and remembering information. Used by more than 250 million people worldwide, they are an essential skill for today's students.
  • Memory Techniques – Students are introduced to powerful memory techniques such as The Journey Method and Mnemonics and how to use them. When these tools are used in conjunction with Active Reading techniques and Mind Maps the participants develop a powerful system for consolidating and remembering new information and can approach all new learning with much greater confidence.

At the end of the seminar the participant have the potential of becoming empowered learners. They will achieve this by repeating and consolidating the material presented and if they do so, will approach all new learning situations in a new and more confident manner.

Seminar Size

The seminar size is normally between 30 and 100 young people.

Duration

This seminar is from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and is particular suited to 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year second level students as well as students in third level colleges or adult learners.

Mind Map Your Way to Examination Success

Mind Maps promote active learning, foster motivation, improve confidence, support a diverse range of learning styles and levels of ability – all in a fun way! They are a must have learning tool for a modern student.

Studies have shown improvements in pupils’ learning after Mind Mapping, this included improved concentration, improved questioning and answering during class discussions and improved independence, which leads to better examination performance.

This seminar builds on the introduction to Mind Mapping in the Empowered Learning Seminar. It is a real hands-on practical session on the application of Mind Mapping.
At the end of this seminar, students will be confident in their use of mind maps as a learning, organisation and creative tool.

The importance of incorporating regular review and mind maps into the Hour of Power – Personal Study Session, is empahsised.

The Super Generation’s trainers of Mind Mapping are trained by the inventor of Mind Mapping, Tony Buzan and are Buzan, Licenced Instructors in Mind Mapping.

This hands-on practical seminar is tailored to each year group. Key elements of the seminar include:

  • The brain and how it processes information.
  • The left and right brain.

Memory Strategies to Supercharge Exam Performance

This seminar builds on the memory strategies introduced in the Empowered Learning Seminar. It is ideal for students that want a real hands-on practical session on the application of memory strategies to their particular course material.

There are three stages to learning: understanding, organising and recalling. In exams, students are measured on their ability to recall information and apply it appropriately. In order to achieve this, they must use effective strategies for storing and organising this information so that it is available for recall when required.

This is the what the Memory Strategies Seminar is all about – giving students the very best available strategies and techniques to recall
information when required.

This seminar is tailored to
individual classes and year groups with class relevant examples.

It is suitable for 3rd – 6th years who previously undertook the Empowered Learning Seminar.
