Mary Harney's Story

The Difference a Teacher Makes - My Personal Account, Mary Harney, TD, Minister for Health

I am fortunate that I remember a number of teachers from my school days with great admiration.  Those that remain foremost in my memory are those who were passionate about their subject and instilled a quiet confidence and trust in their students.

The one teacher that immediately came to mind when I was asked to contribute a piece for this book was a Donegal woman named Sarah Brady. Mrs. Brady was my Maths teacher in Colaiste Bhríde, Clondalkin. She had an unwavering belief in all her students, whatever level they may have been at. She taught with determination, and gentle persuasion. Her students returned this with dedicated study and a hunger for approval.

She had absolute determination and a belief in me. This encouraged me to take Honours Maths in my Leaving Certificate at a time when it was not on offer in the school. With this, came the realisation that anything is possible with persistence, focus, dedication and hard work.

Mrs. Brady motivated me and inspired me.  She continuously encouraged, praised and nurtured her students.  Both in and outside the classroom she was a fabulous person to be around. She had the most infectious smile of anyone I’ve ever known. I was fortunate to see Sarah on many occasions

during my political career.  Unfortunately, she passed away a few years ago, and it was one of the saddest funerals I ever attended.

Sometimes, unconsciously, we absorb traits and habits of those that are dear to us.  I would like to imagine that some of the motivation, that Sarah infected our classroom with, inspired me to be in the position I am today.
